On Friday, Moscow appealed to the Republic of Moldova to stop blocking Russian-language web pages, which it called an attack on press freedom and the rights of the Russian-speaking population, reports EFE.

“We call on the people of Chisinau to refrain from taking steps that have nothing to do with true freedom and democracy, and to lift discriminatory bans on the broadcasting of Russian and Russian-language mass media,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

On Thursday, the Intelligence and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova issued an order to block two Russian news sites Eadayli.com and Bloknot.ru. This decision is a new step towards “displacing Russian-language content and mass media from the information space” of the Republic of Moldova, Zakharova noted.

She recalled that since February of last year, when the Russian military campaign in Ukraine began, the authorities in Chisinau banned a series of programs in Russian and revoked the license of six television stations that broadcast exclusively in Russian.

“All this is being done against the background of openly anti-Russian activities in the country (in the Republic of Moldova, – editor’s note) by Ukrainian and Western media,” the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also noted.

According to Moscow, the measures against the Russian press are a violation of the rights of national minorities in the Republic of Moldova, a country that imposed a state of emergency after the start of the war in Ukraine. (Agerpress)
