Foresters in northeastern Australia were amazed when they came across the largest frog ever recorded, weighing 2.7 kilograms, CNN and ABC News write.
The 2.7kg amphibian was found in Queensland’s Conway National Park last week, the state’s Department of Environment and Science said on social media.
This is a cane toad, which the park workers have nicknamed “Toadzilla”.
The frog lives in reed swamps, hence the name. This is a species that originates from America, but was introduced to Australia, where it became a pest. The skink has glands that secrete a toxic substance, so it has few natural enemies, making it invasive in Australia.
Ranger Kylie Gray said the team encountered the giant toad as it exited their vehicle when they stopped to release the snake.
“I grabbed a cane toad and I couldn’t believe how big and heavy it was,” she said.
The current Guinness record for the largest frog was set in 1991 by the Swedish frog Prinsen, which weighed 2.65 kg.
Toadzilla has since been euthanized due to the damage she is causing to the environment,” the department added in a tweet.
