Mackenzie McDonald produced the surprise of the tournament after knocking out Rafael Nadal. However, the American could not impress more at the Australian Open, losing quite clearly (3-0 in sets) to the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (score 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-2) in the third round.

The 31st seed in Melbourne, Nishioka had some trouble in the first set alone, which came back to haunt him in the tiebreak (8-6).

However, two sets followed in which the Japanese dictated the pace, was aggressive, covered the court well and won the match, 6-3, 6-2. The match lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

After the Australian Open, Mackenzie MacDonald will be left with the most important victory of her career, when the American defeated the record holder of Grand Slam tournaments Rafael Nadal (22 trophies).
