Elections – Western sector of Athens: retaining the acquired SYRIZA or overthrowing N.D.

New, strong nominations from both N.D. and also from SYRIZA and desire for it PASOK signaling in this constituency its dynamic return to the spotlight with a significant increase in its electoral percentage, make the B2 of the western sector of Athens one of the most interesting constituencies for the upcoming elections. It is worth noting that in this constituency, after the elections in July 2019, the prime minister chose to keep his seat. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and g.k. KKE Dimitris Koutsoubas.

The Western Sector of Athens is one of three districts that emerged from the 2018 split of the chaotic Second Athens. Its borders include the municipalities of Peristeri, Egaleo, Agioi Anargyro-Kamaterou, Ilio, Petroupoli, Agia Varvara and Chaydari. The region elected 11 deputies in the first elections held with the new “charter” of Attica in 2019. After the announcement of the 2021 census data, it will be strengthened by one seat in the upcoming elections.Elections - Western sector of Athens: retaining acquired SYRIZA or canceling ND-1

The region combines a number of characteristics that give special interest to the electoral struggle. SYRIZA may have been defeated in the 2019 elections, but in the Western Sector, the official opposition party came first with a percentage of 38.6% and elected four deputies compared to three from the ND, who received a percentage of 29.69%.

The extra seat increases competition as everyone sees an opportunity to increase their representation and interest and competition between candidates increases. ND, which traditionally looks weaker in relation to the overall picture in Western Attica, will seek to increase its percentage and take an additional place. Mr. Mitsotakis had chosen Sector West as one of the three regions in which he had the opportunity to be a candidate in previous elections. He himself put forward his candidacy, speaking at the prefectural meeting of the local ND organization. in Ilion, where he said that “today he can be president of the ND. and with your voice, but in my heart I will always be MP for Athens II, for Western Athens.” Of course, his choice was due to the image of SYRIZA’s superiority in a particular region and the desire to strengthen the prospect of a better electoral result for ND.

In the Western Sector, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and Giannis Loverdos were elected from the ruling party, followed by Gerasimos Gyakumatos. In the next elections, tough competition is expected for candidates, as they have already been declared ND in the region. the candidacies of former Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Deputy Minister of Population Policy and Family Maria Siregela. Both current deputies and new candidates have every reason to strive to strengthen the party composition in order to qualify for an additional seat and increase their chances of being elected to the next parliament.

Mr. Mitsotakis had chosen Sector West in previous elections as one of the three regions in which he had the opportunity to be a candidate.

Conditions for fierce competition are also being formed for SYRIZA, as new, especially strong candidates are added to the already “heavy” names elected in this region. From the official opposition party, Yiannis Dragasakis, Dimitris Vitsas, Hara Kafantaris and Panagiotis Kurumplis represent the western sector in parliament. Mr. Kurumplis won a seat against Thanasis Papachristopoulos at the Electoral Court after a recount. At the initial count, Mr. Papachristopoulos was in the lead with 6 votes and took the seat, which was finally given to Mr. Kurumplis in December 2020, a year and a half after the election.

In the Western sector, the candidates for the upcoming elections will be Efi Ahtsioglu and Rena Duru, two very strong candidates who change the facts, and the competition between them for who will get more crosses is also interesting. What remains to be seen and what all candidates are looking forward to is what Giannis Dragasakis will do. That is, if he wins an honorable seat in one of the last places on the state ballot, or if he remains in Sector West, in which case the competition for a seat in the next parliament will be cutthroat.

PASOK in previous elections elected Nadia Giannakopoulou in this constituency, receiving a percentage of 6%, significantly lower than the 8.1% she received in the Territory. Especially when you consider that the Second Athens and Western Attica in particular were a privileged area for the party during its rule. Thus, the desire of Harilaou Trikoupis to significantly increase the percentage in this region, to “reunite” the party with its electoral base, which is usually reported, is understandable. Michalis Karchimakis is a strong candidate, while the party amplifies its vote with the “televisionist” retired EL.AS officer Thanasis Katerinopoulos.

And for the KKE, the Western Sector is an important region because of its special population and socio-economic characteristics. The party in the 2019 election was third in that constituency with an 8.65% percentage, well above the territory’s 5.3%. Dimitris Koutsoubas, who chose a seat in the previous elections, will not be a candidate here this time. In 2019, Giannis Protoulis was the leader in cross country.

In Sector West, 2019 also saw the election of Maria Athanasiou of Hellenic Solution and Kriton Arsenis of MeRA25.
