The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Petre Daea, said on Thursday in Tirgu Mures that the introduction, through the National Strategic Plan (PNS) 2023-2027, of measures to support “bull welfare” is motivated by the fact that “this species is going through a difficult moment”. because “all accusations are a cow between the horns.”
“For the first time in Romania, we are introducing welfare for both beef and dairy bulls. We know very well that this species is going through a difficult time. You know it everywhere here. It’s a huge burden, also created by the drought that we’ve had, which you’ve dealt with mostly out of your pocket, to a lesser extent in this area, but also here taurine, the dairy cow, is now enemy number one for the planet, has become a major polluter. All accusations are a cow by the horns, the cow is to blame for everything,” said the Minister of Agriculture, according to Agerpres.
“In conditions where we know very well that the ecosystem must remain in an optimal ratio, and a plant without an animal or land without an animal does not exist. How can you have livestock without crops, how can you have a processing industry from livestock if you don’t have animals. So what are we talking about here? This ecosystem, which, on the one hand, preserves a touch of biodiversity and European interests, and not only that, we must see it in its reality and in its size to be able to move forward. And that is why we are introducing welfare as a form of support for the first time, we are introducing payment for milk and ingots,” Petru Daea said during the regional conference of the PNS Knowledge Caravan 2023-2027 in Tirgu Mures.
The Minister of Agriculture also said that the difficult moment experienced by livestock, also caused by drought in some areas, can be overcome by supporting dairy cows, welfare measures are 100 euros per head of animal, according to the National Strategy Plan this aid scheme, adding to the European and state subsidies, which were previously provided to this branch of animal husbandry.
Petre Daea has also praised sheep a lot in the past, even saying that “sheep are a living statue” and should be used as the country’s brand.
During his last mandate at the Ministry of Agriculture, Petre Daea celebrated his 70th PSD birthday with a sheep-shaped cake while his colleagues sang happy birthday to him while Petre Daea wiped away tears.
Daea, known for his flamboyant remarks, was the subject of a viral video over the weekend of him falling asleep and snoring during a televised appearance. Petre Daea objected, adding that “I don’t even sleep at night…”
