The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Jose Manuel Albarez, on Wednesday expressed reservations about the possible supply of Leopard battle tanks, which belong to Spain, to Ukraine, dpa reports.

In total, Spain has 108 Leopard 2A4 tanks and another 229 Leopard 2E, a version of the 2A6 tanks adapted to Spanish requirements.

“This possibility is currently not under discussion,” the minister said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, the Spanish agency Europa Press quotes.

He did not rule out such a delivery later, but noted that the meeting will take place at the US Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Friday.

Spain prefers to make such decisions “together and united”, Albarez emphasized.

“Spain’s position in this war is to do what we think is best at every stage to help Ukrainians protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity and restore peace in the country as soon as possible,” said the head of Spain’s diplomacy.

His comments reflect differences of opinion within the Spanish government, dpa said. The formation of Unidas Podemos, a partner of the Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, criticized the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

According to Spanish media, in June Spain was considering the delivery of Leopard tanks in their old 2A4 variant, with 53 such vehicles stored since 2012 at a facility in Zaragoza.

After weeks of speculation about the August delivery, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said the tanks in question were “in a state of total disrepair” and beyond repair, causing consternation in the military community (Agerpres).
