The prime minister will brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on the plan on Saturday, stressing that “we want our actions to speak louder than words,” a Downing Street source told the British publication.

A group of four Challenger 2 tanks will be delivered immediately, with eight more tanks to be dispatched shortly thereafter.

Sunak held talks with defense and security chiefs this week, telling them that sending tanks to Ukraine should be an operational priority, The Sun also noted.

The announcement, if confirmed, comes after weeks of discussions over the supply of a number of Challenger II tanks to the British Army.

Finland announced on Thursday that it may transfer a small number of German-made Leopard 2s to Ukraine if a larger group of European countries also decide to send main battle tanks.

Kyiv has invited heavy military vehicles such as the Leopard 2, but some countries are hesitant.

Poland has said it will send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if there is a larger coalition of countries to do so, while Germany has said it will not, but the answer is not final and could change, especially if, according to the press, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht will retire.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, joined on Tuesday supporters of the delivery of German Leopard tanks to Ukraine: “I think that Ukraine should receive all the military equipment it needs, which it can use for the defense of the Motherland.”
