Mitsotakis from Alexandroupolis: We strive to ensure energy security in the Balkans

“Alexandroupolis plays and will continue to play an extremely important geopolitical, energy and development role,” the Prime Minister said. Kyriakos Mitsotakisduring his speech at the opening ceremony of the power unit Alexandroupolispowered by natural gas, with a capacity of 840 megawatts, which will be built in cooperation with three groups: PPC, DEPA Emporia and the Kopelouzo group.

He said that Alexandroupolis is becoming an energy gateway on a regional and European scale, and “the TAP and IGB pipelines will run through the Balkans to supply our wider region, and tomorrow, why not, even reach Ukraine.”

“This new division that we are essentially creating today is also responding to the pressures of the present, but it is also responding to the challenges of the future. This will increase our ability to generate electricity by reducing imports of electricity, but mainly by increasing exports,” the prime minister said.

Alexandroupolis is acquiring a strategic role on the energy chessboard and, as he noted, “we aim to be a provider of energy security for our neighbors in the Balkans.”

The Alexandroupolis power plant will cost 400,000,000 euros, employ 800 workers and gradually hire 100 supervisors. It will be ready in 32 months. Together with the FSRU floating liquefied natural gas degassing station, which will be ready in 2024, they represent “a dynamic double step into tomorrow’s energy era,” said Mr. Mitsotakis.

“Everything that has happened so far has been neither accidental nor easy. They were achieved thanks to a far-sighted, bold, but at the same time rapid energy policy, which in this area also quickly adapted national capabilities to international reality. We had to turn this test into an opportunity, which we did,” the Prime Minister stressed.

“Elections in the spring – I will be a candidate for Evros”

“The elections will be held in the spring, and they will actually take place at such a point in time that we will practically use up a four-year period,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said earlier.

At a press conference he gave to the regional media in Alexandroupolis, he announced that he himself would be a Euros candidate for symbolic and significant reasons, because, in his words, “Euros is at the forefront of development opportunities.”
