The United States of America believes that Serbia should join the sanctions against Moscow to punish Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, US State Department adviser Derek Chollet said on Friday in Belgrade, as quoted by EFE and Agerpres.

“Russian activity should not only be condemned, but also punished. Russia unleashed a brutal and illegal war,” Scholle told the media in Belgrade after a visit to the Serbian capital.

Scholle assessed that “Serbia has taken some important steps” to condemn the Russian aggression launched by Putin on February 24 at the United Nations, but the United States will cooperate with Belgrade so that the Serbian authorities support Ukraine more.

Serbia, a candidate to join the European Union, is a traditional ally of Russia, which in turn defends Serbia’s interests in international forums regarding Kosovo, a former Serbian province populated mainly by ethnic Albanians that unilaterally declared independence in 2008.

In addition, Serbia is almost entirely dependent on Russian gas supplies, although it has recently tried to diversify its energy sources.

Scholle also warned that Wagner, a Russian paramilitary group close to the Kremlin, is trying to recruit mercenaries in Serbia and other parts of the world, and that the US is “working with Serbia and other countries to put an end to this activity.”
