Russia’s appointment of a new head of the operation to invade Ukraine most likely reflects “systemic challenges” for Russia, according to the spokesperson of the US Department of Defense, writes CNN.

The announcement of Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian General Staff, as the leader of the campaign demonstrates “some of the systemic challenges that the Russian military has faced since the beginning of this invasion,” said Pentagon spokesman Air Force Brig. General Pat Ryder during a press briefing.

“We talked about some of these things, in terms of his logistical problems, his command and control problems, his supply problems, his morale, and his great failure to achieve the strategic objectives that he set out for himself.” Ryder said.

He stated that the agency “will continue to monitor” such personnel changes on the part of the Russians.

“I think the world would rather see Russia focus on getting out of Ukraine and saving innocent lives instead of wasting time on multiple leadership changes, and Russian soldiers and their families would probably like to see that as well,” he said. Ryder.
