The joint Russian-Belarusian air defense force has been reinforced with new missile units deployed in positions, the Ministry of Defense in Minsk said on Wednesday, as quoted by Reuters.
“Anti-aircraft missile systems have been installed in designated areas and are in combat mode,” the ministry said in a brief statement.
Belarus is a close ally of Russia and allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to use its territory as a launching pad for his February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
The two countries plan to conduct joint air exercises in the second half of January, starting next Monday.
Ukraine has repeatedly warned that Putin may try to use Belarus for a new offensive against Ukraine from the north, a move that would open a major new front in this war that Russia is waging on Ukrainian territory, Reuters comments. (Source Agerpres)
