The weather in December was much warmer than usual, with the biggest difference from normal observed in places known for being cold, such as Mercury Chuk and Joseni. In the middle of last month, Sibiu was above 20 degrees for the first time, breaking the record set in 1957, according to ANM data.

The average temperature in December 2022 ranged from -5.0 °C at Vf.Omu weather station to 6.5 °C at Mangalia.

In December 2022, five meteorological stations exceeded the maximum absolute monthly temperature and two recorded the maximum absolute monthly precipitation in 24 hours.

In Sibiu, +20.1°C was recorded on December 16, which exceeded the previous record for the last month of the year by almost one degree. It was +20.4°C in Chernavod and +20.1°C in Harshov, breaking the records of 1989.

The 24-hour rainfall record was broken at Sânnicolau Mare, the weather station where the previous December rainfall record had stood since 1965.

The deviation of the average air temperature for December 2022 from the median of the standard interval (1991-2020) across the country was positive. In most regions, deviation values ​​were higher than 2°C, and in large areas of Transylvania, Banat, Crisana and Maramureş they exceeded 3.0°C,

The highest values ​​exceeded 4°C and were recorded at three weather stations in the inner mountain depressions located in eastern Transylvania, Joseni (4.4°C), Toplița (4.1°C) and Merkurja-Chuk (4.0°C), data show. National Meteorological Administration.

It must be said that 4 degrees of average monthly temperature is colossal. For example, Mercury Chuk had three days with a maximum above +10 C, where such high December temperatures were observed only in exceptional cases until 2000.

Total precipitation in December 2022 was below 50 mm in most of the country, in large areas of Transylvania, Oltenia and Muntenia respectively, as well as in Moldova and Dobrudja.

The most precipitation this month was recorded at the Stâna de Vale station, namely 289.7 mm. The city of Apuseni is the “rain pole” in Romania.

The lowest amount of precipitation this month was less than 10 mm and was recorded in Moldova, at the weather station Tg. Neamts (8.3 mm) and in the Danube Delta, in Sulin (8.5 mm).

The deviation of precipitation in January 2022 compared to the median of the standard reference interval (1991-2020), calculated as a percentage, was positive in Krishan, Banat and Maramureş, except for some points in these regions where it was negative.

The highest values ​​of positive deviation, more than 100%, were recorded individually in the mountainous area in the north of the Eastern Carpathians, in the Apuseni Mountains, as well as in the Geta Subcarpathia.

The largest positive deviation value was 117.7% and occurred at the Călimani – Rețitiş weather station. In the rest of the country, negative deviations prevailed, less significant in magnitude compared to positive ones.

The lowest value of negative deviations of the amount of precipitation this month was -69.9% and was recorded in the south of Dobrudja, at the Constanta weather station.
