Catherine Mayer, biographer of King Charles, believes Prince Harry’s “Backup/Backup Book” could spell trouble for the British monarchy, but the “absolutely catastrophic” consequences of the attacks on the Duke of Sussex’s royal family behavior are being ignored. It argues that anger over racism, misogyny and wealth within the royal family could undermine public acceptance of the monarchy, The Guardian reports.
“This is probably what will mark the beginning of the end of the monarchy and that is what we should be talking about. This is important given the current lack of trust in the state and the rise of right-wing politics,” Mayer said.
He believes that Prince Harry’s accusations of bullying, racism and misogyny against the royal household, as well as the class divide the monarchy supports, will eventually lead to a decline in public support for the royal family if these issues are not addressed.
“This is not just a celebrity story. We are talking about the status of an important institution of the state with significant powers and significant taxpayer funding, so whether you are pro-monarchy or anti-monarchy, it deserves serious consideration,” she said.
The biographer’s reaction comes after Harry’s book was mistakenly put on sale for a few hours in Spain on Thursday, even though it was due to be published on January 10.
Prince Harry was accused of trying to destroy the British royal family on Friday after shocking revelations in his memoirs appeared to end any reconciliation within the Windsors.
“No one was spared in Harry’s cruel mission to destroy the family,” writes the tabloid The Daily Mirror.
The Sun accuses the exiled prince in California of “throwing his own family under the bus for millions of dollars.” The Daily Mail criticizes Harry for choosing to “spew as much venom as possible”.
