Gauff, who is ranked No. 7 in the world, did not give her opponent a chance as the game was mostly one-way. The American won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 after a match that lasted one hour and 19 minutes.

Ranked 130th in the world at the start of the competition, Masarova will jump 36 places in the WTA rankings: from next week she will be ranked 94th (currently the best position of her career).

Starting with qualifying (where she edged Catherine Sebov and Sara Errani), Masarova knocked out Sloane Stephens (2017 US Open winner), Anna Blinkova, Karolina Mukhova and Isalyn Bonaventure all the way to the grand final.

The ASB Classic (WTA Auckland) was held from January 2 to 8 on hard, was part of the WTA 250 category and offered a total prize money of $259,303.

In the Australian Open 2023 qualification, Rebekah Masarova will meet Romanian Gabriela Talabe Lee in the first round.
