Ukraine, gas hub and Syria on the agenda of the conversation between Erdogan and Putin

The settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, the project to create a gas hub in Turkey and the Syrian problem are expected to be the main topics of the conversation between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

Turkey’s president will have a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday, Ankara said, and later he will also speak with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Obviously, Mr. Erdogan will discuss the situation in Ukraine and Ankara’s new initiatives in this direction cannot be ruled out, given the maintenance of contacts with the leadership of the two countries,” a source in Ankara told Russian TASS. on a possible agenda for talks between the leaders of the two countries.

The gas hub project is also high on the bilateral agenda. “The Turkish side announced plans to create a center for the supply of natural gas to Europe and prices for it during the year. It is also expected that the presidents will touch on the Akuyu nuclear power plant construction project in Turkey, which is scheduled to start this year,” the same source added.

The Syrian issue, according to the interlocutor of the Russian agency, will be another topic that the presidents of Turkey and Russia can discuss. “At the end of December, a trilateral meeting on Syria was held in Moscow at the level of defense ministers, and negotiations between foreign ministers are now planned, which will result in a meeting between the presidents of Turkey and Syria, possibly with the participation of Russia,” he said.

Three weeks ago, Mr. Erdogan announced that he had proposed to Mr. Putin a trilateral meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Such a summit, he said, should be preceded by negotiations at the level of representatives of special services, defense and foreign ministers.
