According to AFP, a 42-year-old man shot his five children, wife and mother-in-law before committing suicide.
The initial elements of the investigation “indicate that the suspect took his own life after killing seven other people in the house,” said a statement from the city of Enoch City, Utah, where the tragedy occurred.
Police discovered the bodies Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call to check on the family, the statement said.
They then discovered eight bodies, all with “gunshot wounds,” the statement continued.
Five children were aged from four to 17 years. The suspect, Michael Haight, also killed his 40-year-old wife and 78-year-old mother-in-law before shooting himself.
The investigation is expected to continue with witness interviews and autopsies, the source added.
Enoch City is a small town of 7,000 in southwestern Utah, more than four hours from the state capital, Salt Lake City.
Joe Biden and his wife Jill “join the people of Enoch in mourning,” the White House said.
“Too many Americans have lost loved ones or seen their lives destroyed by gun violence,” Executive Representative Karin Jean-Pierre added in a statement.
“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless violence,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox said on Twitter, asking for prayers for the city’s residents.
