The year started with new savings offers from the state through Tezaur, but the banks also have competitive interest rates from this point of view. Have they beaten inflation?

First of all, we note that BNR estimates inflation in the first quarter of next year at 9.8% (at the end of this year – 11.2%).

*Of course, these expectations are indicative because no one knows the future.

The only advantage of the state offer is that no income tax is paid and there are no commissions. But in terms of amounts, you can find a better offer in banks.

Let’s say a person has 2,000 lei and wants to place it somewhere with low risk.

It has several options, but 2 are more prominent: bank deposit and treasury securities. Other less well-known are Fidelis securities already registered (since there don’t seem to be any new issues in January), investment funds (fund units) with low risk, shares in various companies (but with higher risk) and other instruments related to market shares (obviously with corresponding risk).

h2 What offers are there for money placed for 1 year

If we look at bank deposits, we will notice that the best offers for 1 year are interest rates of 8-9%, which would lead to a profit of 144-162 lei (after paying commissions and income tax), for example, from 2000 lei.

Pay attention to the APR, because there are offers that can trick you with high interest rates, but in reality they are lower, so the return is reduced.

To give you an idea, CEC Bank offers 8%, BCR the same: and the real profit is 144 lei. Another bank, OTP Bank, has 8.2%, but the real profit is 86.56 lei.

TBI Bank offers 9% and the profit is 162 lei.

These are just a few examples. For a better idea, go to FinZoom.ro or Conso.ro.

The state offers Tezaur an interest rate of 7.35% per year, which means a profit of 147 lei (income is not taxed).

None of the above proposals outperforms the current inflation forecast. To exceed the level estimated at the end of the first quarter of 2024, this increase should have been 196 lei per year.

What are the offers for money placed in 2 years

Banks offer from 8 to 9.6% per year, and after two you will receive a profit of 288 – 345 lei (after paying commissions and income tax).

The state offers through Tezaur for 2 years 7.6% per annum, which will mean 304 lei (152 lei/year).

Tezaur is also valid for 3 years (in January) and the state receives 8%, which means a profit of 480 lei (160 lei/year).

Individuals with larger bank deposits (50,000-€60,000 lei equivalent) will be hit hard by the new thresholds (i.e. CASS will be paid at the rate of 6 minimum salaries. If deposits are larger, you will report 12 or 24 salaries). ). Here’s where the state eats up more of their earnings, as HotNews.ro recently revealed: What will change in the taxation of bank savings in 2023: more money to the state if you have large deposits
