The construction procedures for the cable car at Monemvasia Castle begin

Construction plan for the cable car to her castle Monemvasia by the Ministry of Culture.

The specific project was announced by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendonis, in July 2021 to make the monument accessible to all and was included in the Recovery and Sustainability Fund with a total budget of €6,800,360.

The project concerns the supply, installation and operation of a cable car to provide access to the Upper Town of Monemvasia, as well as the fastest approach in case of emergencies (transportation of the sick, injured or fire, etc.).

At the same time, it is planned to form a network of excursion routes around the Upper City, connect the arrival zone with visited monuments and restore the superstructure of the Upper City wall.

Where the cable car will be built:

The project is being carried out in accordance with a program contract between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Monemvasia and PARNONAS S.A. Related work on the monuments is carried out by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia.

As Ms. Mendoni stated: “The ubiquitous accessibility of monuments and archaeological sites, especially where heavy traffic has been recorded, is a priority for the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Monemvasia, in addition to its unique historical and archaeological importance, is an important destination. The cable car will not only facilitate access to the Upper City and the Hagia Sophia, in whose restoration YPPOA has invested heavily, but will also allow disabled people and people with disabilities in general to get closer to the especially important monuments of the castle state. The rock lighting project, promoted in cooperation with the Peloponnese region, and now the cable car, gives a new impetus to tourism and its special forms, as well as an experiential cultural experience for all of us.”
