The funeral procession also passed the home of Pele’s mother, Celeste, who is 100 years old and does not know her son has died, the family choosing not to tell her because of her poor health.
On the balcony of the house was Pele’s sister, 78-year-old Maria Lucia, who thanked the fans for their kind thoughts.
The city of Santos was “paralyzed” on Tuesday, with shops closed as everyone was on the streets waiting for the funeral procession to pass.

Pele, buried in the highest vertical cemetery in the world
After a nearly three-hour procession, the funeral cortege arrived at the Necropole Ecumenica memorial cemetery in Santos (the tallest in the world, with 14 floors).
Due to the logistics of the visits, Pele was buried on the 1st floor of the cemetery instead of the 9th (next to his brother and father).
Upon arrival at the cemetery, before the coffin was lowered from the fire engine, a funeral march, one of the FC Santos anthems and the religious song Segura na Mão de Deus was played.
