The World Health Organization needs more information to assess the latest wave of infections in China, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
His statement came amid a huge discrepancy between what Chinese authorities are reporting and what experts believe is currently happening in China regarding the coronavirus.
This month, the number of COVID-19 infections increased in China after Beijing abandoned its “zero-virus” policy, including periodic PCR testing of the population.
In response, countries such as the US, South Korea, India, Italy, Japan and Taiwan have begun requiring coronavirus tests for people arriving from China.
“To make a comprehensive risk assessment of the COVID-19 situation in China, WHO needs more detailed information,” Tedros wrote on Twitter.
“In the absence of full information from China, it’s clear that countries around the world are acting in ways they believe can protect their populations,” he added.
China reported just one death from Covid on Wednesday and Thursday, but experts say the real numbers are much higher. According to the latest estimates, 9,000 people are now dying from Sars-Cov-2 in China every day.
Chinese authorities have said that only the deaths of COVID patients who died of pneumonia and respiratory failure are counted as Covid-related deaths.
