Santos, the team where the legendary player shone Peleit was officially announced shortly after midnight on Thursday (29.12) that the last “farewell” to the great Brazilian through a popular pilgrimage will take place next Monday (01.02) at the Vila Belmiro stadium.
The body of the “king” of football, who “passed away” on Thursday at the age of 82, will be transferred from the Albert Einstein Hospital to the stadium early Monday morning (February 1).
According to the club, Pele’s coffin will be placed in the center of the stadium and the ground will open to the public at 10:00 on Monday (February 1). The popular pilgrimage will last until 10:00 pm on Tuesday (March 1). The ceremony will be followed by a parade through the streets of Santos, passing by Canal 6, where Doña Celeste, Pele’s mother, lives.
The body of the greatest football player who brought Brazilian football to the fore will be buried in the “Ecumenical Monument of the Necropolis” near the coast of São Paulo in a ceremony “attended” only by members of the Pelé family.
Public access for the public pilgrimage to the stadium will be through gates 2 and 3 and exit through gates 7 and 8. Officials will enter to pay their respects to Pele through gate 10.
As it became known from the hospital of São Paulo “Albert Einstein”, the three-time world champion died of multiple organ failure. He has been in the hospital since 29 November. His hospitalization was due to a respiratory infection after contracting Covid-19 and a reassessment of his colon cancer treatment.
Pelé underwent surgery in September 2021 and has since undergone multiple chemotherapy treatments. In early 2022, metastases were found in the intestines, lungs and liver.
On December 21, a medical report from the hospital noted that Pelé had a “progressive oncological disease” and that he needed additional help related to kidney and heart dysfunction. Therefore, the former player was not allowed to spend Christmas at home, as the family wanted.
Despite the difficult situation, Pele spent several days stable and recovered a little. However, in the past few days, the health of the “king” has deteriorated again, and he “passed away” at 15:27 Thursday (20:27 Greek time).
