Brazilian football legend Pelé has died at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer.
The loss of arguably the best football player of all time, who spent several weeks in a Sao Paulo hospital, causes grief all over the world – for football fans and football lovers alike.
Pele passed away at 3:27 pm local time due to cancer-related multiple organ failure, according to an official hospital announcement.
The post that Pele’s daughter announced his death on Instagram. “Everything we have is thanks to you. We love you endlessly. Rest in peace,” wrote Kelly Cristina Nascimento.
The Brazilian star’s health has deteriorated significantly recently as he stopped responding to chemotherapy and also contracted Covid.
Pele’s daughters, Flavia and Kelly Cristina Nascimento, have been by his side in his final days, and on Saturday (December 24), he and his son Edinio arrived at the Albert Einstein Hospital to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas together.
Pelé was admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital back in late November (November 29) for a re-evaluation of a cancer treatment that proved ineffective, but then he also developed a respiratory infection caused by Covid. However, along the way, in December, doctors discovered the “progression” of cancer, and Pele simultaneously began to show “renal and heart failure.”
Pele, 82, has been diagnosed with colon cancer since September 2021.

His record – 1281 goals in 1363 matches – has not been surpassed so far, while he will also go down in history as a footballer who won the World Cup three times (in 1958, 1962 and 1970) for 17 years.
