Who was better between Pele and Maradona? It is impossible to talk about one thing without mentioning the other. Their rivalries and comparisons were inevitable for the two greatest footballers of all time. Although they have never met each other on the field, having careers in different eras, there has always been a debate about who holds the upper hand.

Pele or Maradona? Who was bigger?

For Brazilians, Pele will forever remain a player of three World Cups with more than 1,000 goals scored, their king, writes Marca.

However, for Argentinians, Maradona will always represent the legendary footballer who led the Albiceleste team to the World Cup title in Mexico in 1986.

Daniel Passarella described him perfectly: “Maradona was more attractive when he played, but Pele was more intelligent.”

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) recognized Pele as the best football player of the last century.

In addition to the football debate, Pele and Maradona played their numerous “matches” in front of journalists. Here are some of their most popular lines.

Pele’s arrows at Maradona

“Maradona was a great player, but he didn’t shoot well with his right foot and didn’t score with his head. The only important goal scored with a header was actually scored with a hand.”

“My mom always said I was better.”

“Maradona is not a good example. He was a great footballer but unfortunately we have to see what happened to him.”

“These two come out of the museum to talk and talk nonsense. They are two fools.” (Meaning Pele and Beckenbauer)

“Pele took the wrong pill. Instead of a sleeping pill, he took a morning pill. I suggest that next time he takes his pills properly before speaking. And change the doctor.”

“Pele played with footballers who couldn’t even move.”

“We can’t even blame him: he hasn’t done anything for 20 years. The only place you see him is at award ceremonies, behind the FIFA president, and he looks like a remote control puppet.”

And in the end, Pele himself decided this dispute: “Di Stefano was better than me and Maradona.”
