American singer Mariah Carey set a new record with her Christmas song “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, released in 1994, according to the French newspaper Le Nouvel Observateur. The star receives approximately 2.5 million euros a year for copyrights related to this song, Ouest-France reports. In total, in 2019, Forbes magazine estimated that the single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” brought the singer more than $60 million in revenue.
For almost 30 years, the single “All I Want For Christmas” has become a symbol of the end of the year holiday and is listened to by many people. 2022 was no exception to this rule for the famous American singer. The single, written by her ex-husband Tommy Mottola, set a new record for the most streamed song in a single day on Spotify, with 21.27 million streams.
The announcement on Twitter by the specialized company Chart Data made Mariah Carey react very quickly. She shared a video on social media showing her collapsing (thankfully) on the couch when she heard the news.
“I did not expect to wake up to this wonderful surprise,” the American star wrote in a message published on her Twitter account, which has been viewed by almost 5 million people.
“Queen of Christmas” and accusations of plagiarism
Released in November 1994, this song with lyrics by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasyev was the lead single from the pop star’s fourth studio album, Merry Christmas. Her success also includes a financial component, as the star receives approximately 2.5 million euros a year for the song’s copyright, Ouest-France reports. In total, in 2019, Forbes magazine estimated that the single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” brought the American singer more than 60 million dollars in income.
Buoyed by her annual success, Mariah Carey wanted to take things even further and register her status as the “Queen of Christmas” as an official brand. However, in November, an American justice rejected his request, considering the name too general.
This summer, Mariah Carey was sued for $20 million for copyright infringement over her song “All I Want For Christmas is You.”
In the lawsuit of the composer Andy Stone, the name of the singer and her colleague Walter Afancieff is mentioned.
In legal documents filed in the Eastern District Court of Louisiana, Stone claims that he was involved in the creation of the song in 1989 and never gave permission for its use.
The documents, obtained by PA Media, state that Mariah Carey and her colleagues “knowingly, willfully and willfully engaged in a campaign” to infringe Stone’s copyright on the song.
The documents add that the defendants also committed “acts of unjust enrichment by misappropriating the plaintiff’s work and related goodwill.”
