The FSB announces the termination of “communities” of supporters of the jihadist organization “Islamic State” (ISIS), which transported militants to Syria and Ukraine, reports TASS together with the Russian prosecutor’s office.
“The Federal Security Service, together with the Investigative Committee and the Federal Service for Financial Monitoring, eliminated terrorist groups in the Ural Federal Districts and the North Caucasus,” said the press service of the FSB, published on Monday.
FSB officials claim that the organizer of the jihadist transportation network and 10 of its members have been detained, while the SBU refers to the “extensive interregional support network for the resources of the international terrorist organization ISIS”, which has been active since December 2021.
The FSB also claims that members of the community transported militants from Russia to the territory of Syria and Ukraine to “conduct hostilities against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, as well as to finance terrorism and justify terrorist activities.”
FSB agents report that members of the network were arrested in Dagestan, Chechnya, Tyumen Oblast and the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District of Siberia.
The FSB claims to have found “videos” of ISIS fighters fighting on the Ukrainian side
“During the searches of the houses of the persons involved, means of communication, means of payment and personal computers were seized, in which photo and video materials were found about the participation of members of the terrorist community in hostilities on the territory of Syria in the ranks of ISIS, i.e. as well as in the nationalist units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Ukraine,” the FSB claims.
“Two members of this terrorist community have been sentenced by the courts to long terms of imprisonment,” the FSB of Russia reported, adding that 8 members of the liquidated network are under international arrest.
In November, the FSB also announced it had foiled a “terrorist attack” against South Stream, a pipeline built to carry Russian natural gas under the Black Sea to Europe via Bulgaria, with FSB agents saying the team involved civilians as well as Russians.
However, the gas pipeline is not working because Moscow abandoned the project several years ago.
Vladimir Putin appealed to the FSB to step up its activities inside Russia
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the FSB to step up surveillance of Russian society and the country’s borders to prevent risks from abroad and those created by “traitors from within.”
“Any attempt to violate the border must be stopped quickly and effectively, using any forces and means at our disposal, including mobile units and special forces,” the Russian leader added.
As a former agent of Russia’s Soviet-era intelligence services (KGB), Putin ordered the FSB to “use operational, technical and personnel potential” as much as possible to strengthen its control over society.
“With maximum aplomb, it is necessary to concentrate our counterintelligence forces, including military intelligence,” Vladimir Putin emphasized.
“It is necessary to strictly destroy the actions of foreign special services, to promptly identify traitors, spies and saboteurs,” the head of the Kremlin instructed.
