Emmanuel Macron on Friday condemned a “disgusting attack” that “targeted Kurds in France” as the political class expressed its “shock” after a man killed three people and wounded three others in Paris’ 10th arrondissement, reports said AFP.

“The Kurds of France were the target of a brutal attack in the center of Paris. I think about the victims, about the people who are fighting for their lives, about their families and loved ones. Kudos to our law enforcement agencies for their courage and calm,” the head of state added on Twitter.

Earlier, Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne called the gun attack a “disgusting act”, expressing her “thoughts” and “full support for the victims and their families”. “Thank you to the officers of the police prefecture who arrested the alleged criminal” and “to the Paris firefighters involved,” the head of government continued in a message on Twitter.

Numerous political figures also expressed their “anger” or “sadness” after the tragedy, which occurred on a busy street in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, near the Kurdish cultural center.

“This is not an armed attack, but a racist crime,” said Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the Communist Party.

“Sadness and anger at the terrorist attack on the Amet Kaya Kurdish cultural center in Paris,” Jean-Luc Mélenchon also wrote on Twitter.

“Ten years ago, almost exactly today, three female Kurdish leaders were killed in the middle of Paris. Enough!” he continued, pleading to “protect our Kurdish allies.”

Violent protests broke out in Paris after an armed attack that killed three Kurds. Members of the Ahmed Kaya Cultural Center, victims of the attack, chanted “start again, don’t protect us, kill us.” Security forces had to use tear gas, reports Le Parisien.
