Holger Rune aims to become the leader in the ATP hierarchy in 2023

The 19-year-old Dane had an impressive 2022 and was a reserve on the 2022 Champions Tour, ranked 11th in the ATP rankings.

Also this year, Holger Rune achieved the most important success of his career, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the ATP Paris tournament with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In addition to the title won in Paris, the Dane, coached by Patrick Muratoglu, also won tournaments in Munich and Stockholm.

In an interview with Eurosport.co.uk, Patrick Muratoglu said that Holger Roon’s goal of becoming the ATP No. 1 in 2023 is quite achievable.

“I think that the first place on the ATP in 2023 is very realistic for Holger. If you limit yourself, you will not be able to overcome them.

He has every reason to have bold goals. It is not only the results that speak for it, but also the way they mobilize when they set such lofty goals.

That kind of pressure works very well for him.” – he declared.

The Frenchman also said they are preparing intensively for the first Grand Slam tournament of 2023, the Australian Open, where in his first appearance (2022) Holger Rooney was knocked out in the first round.

In addition, Patrick Muratoglu wanted to clarify the fact that morally his student is very prepared.

“If it’s not No. 1 in 2023, no problem. He knows that if he works, he will succeed. Maybe it will take another 6 months, a year, two or three years. But he will get there and do everything in his power to make his dream come true.

He has a strong psyche, he is helped by the fact that he expresses his ambitions. Other players shy away from admitting that they want to win a tournament because they think it’s demoralizing, but Rune is even more willing to put it into words.

It’s a challenge for him, and it helps him a lot.”
