One Swiss company says there is demand on the market for a two-seater electric microcar that is only 2.5 meters long, a meter shorter than the electric Dacia Spring. The Italian car Microlino develops a speed of up to 90 km/h and costs from 15,000 euros.

The car is modeled after the BMW Isetta of several decades ago, and the company promises a range of 230 km, and the Microlino weighs less than 500 kg. The vehicle only has two seats and the company that makes the car says there is a demand in the market because it is an ideal car for the city, especially since, being small, it can be parked where larger cars cannot.

Reuters quotes the car’s creators, Oliver and Merlin Aubother, as saying the Microlino is cheaper to build than a conventional car, with fewer components and a smaller battery.

The battery has a capacity of 14 kWh, the starting price is 15,000 euros. About 35,000 people have reserved the car, but it remains to be seen how many of them will buy it.

There aren’t many companies making small EVs because they’re hard to produce at a decent price, considering the battery can cost more than 60% of the total cost. For companies, profitability on such cars is much lower.

For the Microlino, price is an issue because for €15,000 you are buying a very small machine.
