Actress Amber Heard has announced that she has signed a settlement to end her appeal of a defamation lawsuit filed in the US against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. She agreed to pay the actor $1 million, AFP reports.
- “After much thought, I made the difficult decision to enter into a deal,” the actress wrote on Instagram, without specifying the financial terms of the deal.
“I have lost faith in the American judicial system”
Amber Heard, 36, initially appealed the ruling in June, which ordered her to pay $10 million in restitution to her ex-husband, who in turn had to pay her $2 million in restitution.
- “I made this decision after I lost faith in the American judicial system, in which my public testimony was used as a form of entertainment and fueled by social networks,” said the American actress, Agerpres writes with reference to AFP.
“Million Dollar Payment Shows Ms Hurd Accepts Findings”
Lawyers for Johnny Depp, 59, welcomed the deal on Monday.
- “We are pleased to officially close this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who has made it clear throughout this process that his priority has been to uncover the truth.
- The jury’s unanimous decision and verdict in favor of Mr. Depp against Ms. Heard stand. The $1 million payment that Mr. Depp promised to donate to charity, which he will do, indicates that Ms. Heard accepts the findings,” attorneys Benjamin Chu and Camilla Vazquez said in a statement.
The matter is brief
The legal battle between the two ex-husbands was based on an editorial published in The Washington Post in 2018 in which Amber Heard described herself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence” without specifically naming her husband.
Claiming that the text destroyed his reputation and career, 59-year-old Johnny Depp filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife, in which the Hollywood star demanded $50 million in damages. Amber Heard counterattacked and filed a mirror lawsuit seeking double damages.
After six weeks of deliberations, the jury in the court of Fairfax, a city on the outskirts of Washington, concluded that the two ex-husbands despised each other, but assessed that the damage suffered by Johnny Depp was greater.
The trial, publicized and broadcast live on American television channels, was watched by millions of viewers around the world and caused a wave of hostile messages about actress Amber Heard on social networks.
