Doctors at the Children’s Hospital in Iasi saved both hands of a girl who was seriously injured in an accident on Saturday night in Pashkan, in which a bus with 35 people on board overturned. Alexia faces other surgeries and will need an intensive rehabilitation program of physical therapy and physiotherapy, News.ro reports.
A team of doctors from the Children’s Clinical Emergency Hospital “Sfanta Maria” in Iasi announced that they managed to transplant both of Alexia’s hands after surgery.
“Fortunately, the operation has been successful so far. Replantation of two limbs was successful. One of them was amputated, the other was devascularized. The girl is extubated, breathing on her own. We hope that the child will develop well. Subsequently, surgical intervention will be required to reconstruct and cover the skin defects of the right upper limb. We are convinced that the following interventions will restore the functionality of both upper limbs in the proportion of 85 percent. He will need an intensive rehabilitation program of physiotherapy and physiotherapy. The fact that he intervened very quickly and was able to revascularize very quickly, as well as the very young age of the patient, encourages us to hope that the evolution will be very good,” said Dr. Sidonia Susanou, coordinator of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Children’s Hospital.
Next week, Alexia will be hospitalized in the ATI department for supportive care and undergo another surgical intervention. The next operation will take place on Monday.
“We are planning the next surgery on Monday to reassess the injuries. After the passage of acute inflammatory phenomena, in 3-5 days there is a restructuring of the nervous structures of the left upper limb, after which skin defects are covered in another 3-4 days. It should be noted that the treatment of this child began at the scene of the accident and continued in the emergency department of Pashkan hospital. I thank my colleagues from Pashkani, the anesthesiologist who took care of this child and who performed the first resuscitation manipulations and intensive treatment of the child, which is a long intervention. This is an extraordinary phenomenon, because treatment of this magnitude can only be done from a very good starting point. It was extremely useful for the child that she was brought to the service extremely quickly, where an operative intervention was also performed. This is thanks to the colleagues at SMURD, especially Dr. Graur, who watched the child during the transport. Colleagues from the intensive care unit were the first to provide the patient with supportive therapy,” Sidonia added to Susan.
A large team of doctors, anesthesiologists and nurses was involved in saving the girl.
“Three anesthesiologists, five plastic surgeons, two orthopedic doctors, a large number of nurses, nurses and stretchers practically took part in the operating room. Without the support and participation of all these colleagues, practically one man would not have been able to achieve anything, he would not have been able to achieve any result with this child. Of course, the colleagues who accepted her at UPYU practically coordinated the entire team. The treatment was prescribed first, Dr. Fermeshanu was the one who gave us the information before the patient arrived at the hospital, because by the time the baby arrived, we were already prepared for what we were going to do. This type of surgery has a predictable evolution. The anesthesiologists, especially Dr. Lavinia Ionescu, were prepared with everything necessary to prevent and treat any changes in the patient’s biological status during the 20 hours of surgery. Replantation of large amputated segments of the upper limbs is possible only under the conditions, when extrarenal purification – plasmapheresis – is continuously carried out in the operating room during surgery. Without these supportive intensive care maneuvers, the replantation of an amputated segment of this size cannot be performed,” Sidonia added to Susanu.
A bus with 35 people on board overturned on the night from Friday to Saturday in the Pashkan municipality of Iasi county, 25 people were taken to the hospital. Fifteen passengers were teenagers. Among the injured teenagers was Alexia, who lost both hands at that time.
