Analytics published by a history teacher in the daily Washington Post divided the world in two.
On the one hand, critics were outraged by the “progressiveness” of the author, who noted that Argentina is really “white” – why do they need black players?
On the other hand, there were supporters who appreciated his explanations of the racial evolution of the Argentine population, explanations that practically refer to the erasure over time of the identity of the black population in the South American country.
The article, written by Erika Denise Edwards, a professor of Latin American history at the University of Texas, attracted attention primarily because of its provocative title.
“Why aren’t there more black players in Argentina at the World Cup?”, when other South American countries and even European teams have such players, the author asks.
The most obvious explanation is noticed by Edwards himself: the 2010 census showed that 149,493 people were black (out of a total of more than 45 million), that is, less than 1% of the population.
