A woman and her young son were killed Tuesday night as a tornado tore through rural northwest Louisiana, one of dozens that swept through the area.
Rescuers found the boy dead late Tuesday in a wooded area near the family’s ruined home in Kitwola, a village of 300, according to the Kanto County Sheriff’s Office. According to Sheriff Steve Prator, shortly thereafter, he and his mother were found dead under the rubble of the road above the house. The man was taken to a local hospital, the severity of his injuries was not reported.
“Many buildings are damaged. Trees and power lines were downed,” the sheriff added.
Eighteen tornadoes were recorded in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi from Tuesday evening to early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). A snowstorm has hit the central US over the past two days, leaving many roads in the upper Great Plains and Midwest impassable due to snow. Most schools in these areas remained closed.
