Greek-Turkish: Athens calls for an end to threats of war

Yesterday, Athens responded harshly to Ankara’s continued aggressive rhetoric against our country, through which Turkey is now linking its objections to the demilitarization of the Aegean Islands with the issue of Greek sovereignty and threats of war.

The headquarters of Greek diplomacy, in its statement a day after the new threats, again expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of its neighbor, M. Tsavusoglu, emphasizes that “the statements of Turkish officials regarding the demilitarization of the Aegean Islands have been repeatedly and completely rejected with a number of arguments, which are also contained in the relevant letters, which Greece sent to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The same statement states that “the international community has fully condemned the question of the sovereignty of the Greek islands and the increase in tension in the Aegean due to the threat of war”, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Affairs concludes: “Greece, respecting international law and the law of the sea, once again fully rejects Turkey’s unilateral complaints and characterizes the repeated threats of war as completely unacceptable.”

Recall that Mr. Cavusoglu, during a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart, said, in particular, that “Greece is taking negative steps for our security, despite the circumstances. Militarizes the islands. He takes other steps. Therefore, it is impossible to remain silent about them. Either Greece will back down and comply with these conditions, or we will do whatever it takes. That’s why our esteemed president says, “We can come one night all of a sudden.” Greece must remember the following: he who sows the winds reaps the storms. If you don’t want peace, we’ll do whatever it takes. Suddenly one night.”
