Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have rejected criticism of a documentary about their lives, with their spokesman saying the couple never cited private life as the reason for leaving the royal family, Reuters reported.

In the first three episodes of the long-awaited documentary, the couple – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – made a number of revelations. Meghan recalled her first death threat, Harry opened up about how he disguised himself on their dates but they were made public and filmed with their son Archie.

The release of the documentary, which according to the BBC attracted 2.4 million viewers in the UK for the first episode on the day it was released, has led some to criticize the couple for Meghan and Harry’s earlier vocal complaints about press intrusion.

However, a statement from the couple’s spokesperson dismissed the criticism.

“The Duke and Duchess never cited privacy as a reason for stepping down,” the statement said, pointing out that this is a distorted narrative, according to the BBC.

“They choose to share their story on their terms, but the tabloid press has created a completely false narrative that permeates the press and public opinion.”

Reuters requested a copy of the statement, which was also reported by other media outlets.

The statement emphasized that neither Harry nor Meghan mentioned privacy when they stepped down from royal duties in January 2020 and expressed their desire to continue in their public roles and responsibilities.

Their 2020 statement did not give a reason for their decision to step down as royals.

A few days after the decision, they issued a warning about the harassment they are being subjected to by the paparazzi.

It echoed criticism in 2019 when Harry said he felt his wife faced “bullying” from the tabloids similar to that faced by his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 while trying to escape from paparazzi photos.

The couple severed ties with four of the UK’s biggest tabloids and successfully sued a number of publications.
