In a statement released on Thursday, the SBU accused the couple of collecting secret information for Russia about possible troop deployment locations and the movement of air defense units.

The two, whose names have not been released, are suspected of being officers of the special services of the Russian army who planned to create an agent network in southern Ukraine.

SBU employees found mobile phones and computers with evidence of “hidden correspondence with the aggressor,” the report says.

“The SBU detained both spies when they tried to pass classified information to Russia,” the quoted source added.

Two Russians moved to Ukraine in 2018

Odesa has been a frequent target since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, but remains under Ukrainian control.

According to the SBU, the detained man and woman arrived in Ukraine in 2018 and received residence permits, the man previously served in the Russian army.

The couple allegedly passed on the information they were gathering to a former Russian commando in Crimea who was working with the army’s intelligence service. The Crimean peninsula was occupied by Russia in 2014.

The SBU also published a series of photos of the couple’s detention, the military documents of the detained colonel, as well as the Russian passports of both.
