The Peugeot 408 this is the latest great new product from Sochaux. Halfway between a sedan and one SUV coupe, this crossover sedan will arrive at our dealerships in a few weeks. But if you’re in a hurry, you might want to consider buying the same Chinese car for half the price… or not!

Chinese Peugeot 408?

Changan Automotive is a Chinese car manufacturer based in Chongqing that has been producing cars since 1957. The brand recently announced the release of the Uni-V, which left us wondering.

Indeed, similarity with 508 but especially the last 408 which we tested last November, numerous. Side proportions we find almost equivalent dimensions: 4680 mm * 1838 mm * 1430 mm for the Chinese, while for the French 4690 mm * 1860 mm * 1480 mm. In other words, it’s the same car… From the front grille the body color also looks very identical to the 408. Finally, the rear end is also largely taken from the lifted Lioness, with the same headlight shape and twin exhaust ports positioned as on the 508 this time around.

And the similarity does not end on the outside. Once inside, you almost feel that you are in the presence of the Peugeot i-cockpit. The Chinese manufacturer even went further by capturing famous “piano” keys. lion carriages… I had to dare!

What about the engine?

For us, the 408 is simple and only has three engine levels. Version with 1.2 Clean technology developing 130 hp with clean combustion, and two PHEV models with 1.6, which provides 180 and 225 horsepower thanks to a combination of heat and electricity.

Uni-V by Changan makes… even easier! The Chinese are equipped onlysingle-block 1.5-liter turbo gasolineable to deliver 188 hp and 300 Nm of maximum torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In addition to the motorization, the price is also very different, which is not surprising in the Chinese market. The base value of this Changan Uni-V is 109,000 yuanwhich gives approx 15,700 euros. Needless to say, it is not available for the European market…!
