“At the moment, the compromise solution to today’s vote in the JVS that we are moving towards is separation from Bulgaria, which would give us the opportunity for Romania to join in the fall of 2023, sometime in October-November. Another solution is for Romania and Bulgaria to inform the European Council and wait for a decision favorable to joining the Schengen area. This is a good diplomatic option that Romania has, because we have the support of the Czech Presidency of the President of the European Council, as well as the categorical support of Germany and France. In the European Council, you can discuss and negotiate,” Viktor Negrescu told HotNews.ro.

Romania’s accession to the Schengen zone is currently on the agenda of the JAI Council, to which our country is a member with the support of 26 EU countries, but with Austria’s right of veto. There is virtually no chance of a turnaround, given that the night before the meeting, both the Austrian interior minister and the chancellor said they had no reason to change their minds, citing 75,000 illegal migrants. in Austria, which were not previously registered in any other EU country.

Decisions in the JAI Council are made unanimously.
