On Wednesday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights published a report analyzing 441 killings of civilians in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions in northern Ukraine. Some of the civilians were killed while “cutting firewood or buying food,” the UN report said, according to CNN and News.ro.
The head of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said the report detailed the killings of civilians who were “chopping firewood and buying food” in regions previously occupied by Russian forces after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
After the withdrawal of Russia at the end of March, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions were liberated.
Turk has just completed a four-day visit to the Ukrainian capital.
“We are trying to confirm allegations of additional killings in these regions and in parts of Kharkiv and Kherson regions that were recently retaken by Ukrainian forces,” he said in a statement, indicating that the number could rise further.
“There are strong indications that the extrajudicial executions documented in the report constitute the war crime of (intentional) murder,” he added.
“I’m afraid that a long and gloomy winter is ahead for Ukraine”
In his statement, Turk listed the levels of aid needed by the Ukrainian people, including 17.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and 9.3 million people in need of food and livelihood assistance.
A third of the population had been forced to flee their homes, while 7.89 million had fled the country and 6.5 million were internally displaced, he said.
Turk also said he spent part of his visit at the bomb shelter on Monday, when Russia launched another wave of missile attacks. The UN representative also visited the towns of Bucha and Izyum.
He also noted the impact Russia’s attacks on critical infrastructure will have on the Ukrainian people.
“I am afraid that a long and gloomy winter is ahead in Ukraine. The consequences of the war for the implementation of human rights for the people of the country have already been devastating, and the forecast is worrying,” concluded Turk.
