Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, just a strategic option

The 68-year-old technician made it clear that it was not something personal, but just a strategic option (no, it paid off, given that Gonzalo Ramos scored three goals).

“No relationship, this topic is closed. This was a strategic option that I had been preparing for several days before this game with different moves. A strategic option, nothing more. He is an exemplary professional, and if he has to go on the field, he will help Portugal a lot” – Fernando Santosbefore the match with Switzerland.

Although Ronaldo was clearly unhappy at being forced to sit on the bench, Santos again made it clear that he gets on very well with the 37-year-old star.

“Due to the specifics of the game, I made this decision. They (without Ronaldo and Ramos) are different players. Dalot also came in, Cancelo came out, it’s because of what I thought about the dynamics of the game. Is there a problem?

I have a very close relationship with Cristiano. I have known him since I was 19 years old, and we developed a strong bond. The human aspect has never been misinterpreted. I am a selector, and he is a player, he knows what to do during the match.

For me, he is a very important player of our team. Today he entered the field with great determination. I perceive this team as a team.

I have already answered this question regarding my so-called problems with Ronaldo. Everything was clear, calm, Cristiano showed an example of a true captain,” – Fernando Santos, at the end of the game at Lusail Stadium.
