Morocco unexpectedly reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after defeating Spain in the round of 16 on penalties.

The Spaniards started the match well, had a lot of possession and missed some good chances to score. The Moroccans made dangerous counterattacks several times, but never opened the scoring.

The score remained 0-0 even after two extra periods of 15 minutes each, and a penalty shoot-out decided qualification for the quarters.

The Spaniards missed all three shots from 11 meters through Sarabia, Soler and captain Busquets.

Sabiri, Zieh and Hakimi converted for Morocco, while Benoun missed.

The team coached by Walid Regrahi are in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and await the match between Portugal and Switzerland to find out their future opponent.
