A 41-year-old Iraqi national is being investigated for concealment after he tried to smuggle into Romania through Giurgiu customs a car that Russian authorities had declared stolen, Agerpres reports.

  • “On the night from Sunday to Monday, a 2016 Mercedes GLE 350 D car, driven by an Iraqi citizen, 41 years old, appeared at the Giurgi checkpoint for entry control.
  • During the checks, the Giurgiu border police found out that the car had been in the field of view of the Russian authorities since 2017 and appeared to be stolen,” said a press release issued by ITPF Giurgiu on Monday.

The driver of the car told the border police that he intended to take the car to Iraq and did not know that it was listed as stolen.

The car, valued at almost two hundred thousand lei, was unavailable until the investigation was completed.

In the case, criminal proceedings have been opened on the fact of concealment, the act is provided for and punished by Art. 270, par. 1 CC.
