Single lanes for public transport are one of the measures implemented in all major European capitals to encourage citizens to use public transport, simplifying traffic and reducing pollution. Unfortunately, over the past 10 years, the capital city hall managed to make only about 30 km of unique lanes for trams and buses. So those who gave up their personal car and used public transport have no advantage and are stuck in traffic, on the bus, with other cars? What are the plans of the capital city hall to give priority to public transport?

Bucharest currently has only about 30 km of single lanes for public transport.

Of them, 16.15 km are single bus lanes:

  • bd Unirii – 4 km
  • bd Decebal – 2.8 km
  • b-d Regina Elizaveta – 3 km
  • Near Plevnei – 0.15 km
  • Independence Beach – 0.4 km
  • Union Square – 0.3 km
  • Boulevard C. Coposu – 0.3 km
  • Calea Dorobantilor – 1.2 km
  • Mareşal Prezan House – 0.5 km
  • Boulevard Iuliu Maniu – 1 km
  • building Camp road – 1 km
  • Dacia Boulevard – 1.5 km

Only in some cases, individual lanes are separated by bars. The rest are marked with paint on the asphalt, cars drive over them, sometimes they even stop. And they have no continuity. That is, fragments are scattered across the city, and buses cannot go from one end to the other in one lane.

Separately, a single track was made for the tram, which was separated from the rest of the traffic by poles or fences. In total, about 14 km. Compared to line 41 made before 2007, dividers were also placed on tram line 1/10 for 9 km, tram line 21 for 4.65 km and tram line 32 for 0.6 km, according to , provided by the capital city hall at the request of HotNews.ro. In some areas, buses also run on the same track as the tram. For example, in the case of line 21.

Where does the city hall want to make a single lane?

According to information sent at the request of HotNews.ro, the capital’s city hall is currently creating 3.5 km of single lanes on Calea Dorobanti and Drumul Taberea.

On Calea Dorobanti, between Puțul lui Zamfir Street and Ştefan cel Mare Road, a lane reserved for public transport will be created as part of the Floreasca – Beller – Dorobanti one-way system. So far, the pavements have been restored, posts have been installed to protect the pavements, signs have been installed, trees have been removed, the intersections of Radu Beller, Popa Marin and Floreasca-Belanescu-Rosetti have been switched on), the lane will also be demarcated unique. It will have a length of 2.5 km, and the deadline for the completion of the investment is the end of this year.

One lane along the bldg. Taberei Road runs between Paula Teodorescu Boulevard and Taberei Road No. 34, towards the periphery. Its length is 1 km, and the project is implemented by the City Hall of Sector 6.

Unirii Boulevard already has lanes dedicated to public transport between Unirii Square and Alba Iulia Square, but the municipality wants to install flexible bollards to separate it from general traffic. The length of the lane is 3.5 km, and the bollards will be installed by the end of March 2023, the authorities promise.

The Metropolitan City Hall approves several lanes for public transport on Aviatorny Boulevard, namely:

⦁ between Victory Square and Charles de Gaulle Square, in the direction of Charles de Gaulle Square, shifting the axis of the boulevard to the west, so that there are 4 lanes (3 for general traffic and 1 reserve) towards Charles de Gaulle Square. for public transport), and vice versa 2 lanes;

⦁ between Beijing Place and Place Charles de Gaulle, towards Place Charles de Gaulle, shifting the axis of the boulevard to the east so that there are 4 lanes towards Place Charles de Gaulle (3 for general traffic and 1 reserve). for public transport) and vice versa 2 lanes;

The project also requires minor roadworks on Place Charles de Gaulle. The length of the lanes will be 2.2 km, and the completion date is the end of 2023.

The construction of a public transport lane on B-dul Regele Mihai I, between Piața Presei and Arcul de Triumf, towards Arcul de Triumf, in the middle area, is in the approval stage.

“The project also requires small road works near Press Square. The length of the strip will be 1.2 km. Estimated completion date is 12/31/2023,” says the response sent by the capital’s mayor’s office.

And the former mayor of the capital, Gabriela Firea, in May 2017 created a single lane on the DN1 route – Kiseleva Boulevard – Prezan Boulevard – Kalea Dorobanti, but she refused the next day, as traffic was blocked in the entire village. square, line to Otopeni.

Nikushor Dan wants to make one lane on the restored tram lines

Capital City Mayor Nikushor Dan said in a recent interview with HotNews.ro that after the reconstruction of 50 km of the tram line, where design and implementation contracts have already been put out to tender, they will be demarcated as one lane and will also be used by buses.

“We want to expand bus traffic on the tram line. To drive a bus along the tram line, it needs to be restored. If they walked on what looked like unrepaired tram tracks now, they would have ruined the tires. We are conducting public procurement and will finance the restoration of 50 km of the tram line through ROP with 500 million euros. There are tram lines that are very bad, for example on bd. Mihalache or Bd. Basarabiei. This will mean, on the one hand, speed for trams, on the other hand, it will mean separate lines for buses that have common routes,” Nikushor Dan explained.
