The European Union will try, with the support of the United Nations, to create a court to investigate and prosecute war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, said the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. A European official says that more than 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers and about 20,000 civilians have died since the start of the war, The Guardian notes.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has brought untold death, devastation and suffering. We all remember the horrors of Buchi. According to estimates, more than 20,000 civilians and more than 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed to date.
“Russia must pay for its terrible crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state. That is why, while we continue to support the International Criminal Court, we propose the establishment of a specialized court with the support of the United Nations to investigate and try the crime of Russian aggression.
“We are ready to start working with the international community to get the widest possible international support for this specialized court.
The head of the European Commission wants Russia to pay for the devastation of Ukraine and take money for the restoration of the conquered country from Russian oligarchs.

We will work with the ICC and help create a specialized court to try Russia’s crimes.

Russian oligarchs must pay for the destruction
“Damage suffered by Ukraine is estimated at 600 billion euros. Russia and its oligarchs must compensate Ukraine for the damages and the costs of restoring the country.”
“We have frozen 300 billion euros of Russian Central Bank reserves and 19 billion euros of Russian oligarchs’ money,” said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the EU executive.
She said that in the short term, the EU and its partners can manage the funds and invest them.
The revenue will go to Ukraine to eventually compensate for the damage caused to the country, Reuters reports.
