
OUR Hakim Jeffreys a new leader was elected today Democratic Party in House of Representatives, first African American to hold office in Congress.
The election of Jeffries also marks the emergence of a younger generation of political leaders in the 435-member House of Representatives and the end of the Nancy Pelosi era. In 2007, Pelosi became the first woman to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The 52-year-old New Yorker will take office when the 118th US Congress meets on Jan. 3.
Shortly before the vote was announced, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Jeffreys’ election was “a turning point in American history.” Both men are from Brooklyn, New York.
Jeffreys was elected as a member of parliament for ten years and on November 18 announced his candidacy for the post of head of the Democratic Party caucus.
However, it should be recalled that after the midterm elections in November, the majority in the House of Representatives now belongs to the Republicans.
