Lionel Messi was threatened by boxer Canelo Alvarez after the Argentine kicked a Mexico shirt in the Pumas dressing room on Saturday night following their World Cup win in Qatar. Mexico captain Andres Guardado clarified the situation in an interview with TyC Sports.

Guardado (Betis Sevilla), whose shirt was on the floor, came to Messi’s defense and called the whole situation caused by Canelo Alvarez’s post “stupid”.

“I had the good fortune and the privilege of meeting him over the years in Spain and I know the kind of person Leo is. Unfortunately, maybe Alvarez doesn’t understand what it’s like in the dressing room and I can understand his reaction, that he was offended to see a Mexico shirt on the floor.

Personally, I think it’s pointless because it doesn’t matter much. All of these things seemed to create controversy or sell certain things. Every time I had the opportunity to ask Messi for something, change his shirt or take a picture with my son, he always did it.

Who has never been in a football locker room does not understand. This is an agreement with the staff, which goes something like this: everything sweaty must stay on the floor and will be washed, and what you don’t leave on the floor, you take home. Dirty clothes end up on the floor, whether it’s your shirt or your opponent’s, it always does. The shirt was actually mine, I swapped with Leo, and it was thrown on the floor to be washed. It was clear in the dressing room, because we are football players and did not attach more importance to it.

I’m against social media, I don’t understand the scale of what happened. I saw Canelo’s main post where he took offense to the image…I can understand Canelo because he’s never been in a locker room, but other than that, we shouldn’t give him more weight.” – Andres Guardado for TyC Sports, an Argentinian publication.
