A landfill on the outskirts of Kherson provides visible clues to local reports that Russian soldiers cremated the dead bodies of their comrades here, The Guardian reports.
Russian flags, military uniforms and helmets of Russian soldiers were among the items spotted among the piles of rubbish by British journalists who came to the site.
Residents of the city report that the Russian military has not allowed them to the training ground since the summer, and the place is heavily guarded by armed Moscow soldiers.
Several residents told The Guardian that the reason for the secrecy was that the occupying forces used the dump here to dump and then burn the bodies of comrades killed in Ukrainian bombing and fighting in the area.
Residents reported seeing Russian trucks carrying black sacks to the landfill, which were then set on fire, filling the air with the terrible smell of burning meat.

“Every time our army bombed the Russians here, they transported the remains to the landfill and burned them there,” Iryna, a 40-year-old resident, told British journalists.

“The Russians came up with it [camion] Kamaz, full of garbage and corpses, shuffled and unloaded. Do you think someone was going to bury them? They threw their garbage at them and that’s all,” said a garbage man from Kherson who wished to remain anonymous.
At the same time, he stated that he did not see whether the bodies belonged to military personnel or civilians.
“I’ve said enough. I am not afraid, but I have been fighting since 2014. I was in Donbas. But the less you know, the better you sleep,” he added.

The Russian army occupied Kherson in the first days of the war
Another 45-year-old resident, Svitlana Viktorivna, said that for years she and her husband brought garbage here with a truck, but this summer the Russians put a roadblock at the entrance.
“We weren’t even allowed to go near the pit when the bodies were being burned,” she says.
Several residents of the Soviet-era apartment building also described a large cloud of smoke rising into the air when the Russians began burning operations.
“It made me sick when I smelled it. And it was also scary, because it smelled like burnt hair, it smelled like a dentist, when your teeth are drilled before filling. And the smoke was such that you couldn’t see the block opposite,” says Olesya Kokorina, a 60-year-old resident of Kherson, who lives on the 8th floor of this building.
