Twitter closes its offices in Brussels – concern in the EU

Twitter closed its entire Brussels office, raising concern among EU officials. on whether the social media platform will comply with the EU’s tough new rules on online content.

Julia Moser and Dario La Naza, who were responsible for Twitter’s digital policy in Europe, left the company last week, according to the FT.

The aforementioned executives have spearheaded the company’s efforts to comply with the EU disinformation code that went into effect last week, setting new rules to protect Internet users.

Other Twitter executives from the small but vital Brussels office, which is primarily responsible for developing digital policy in the EU, quit earlier this month due to layoffs.

Moser and La Nasa “survived” the initial purge but no longer work there after new owner Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to employees last week urging them to adhere to a “tough work culture.” However, it is not clear if they resigned or were fired.

It is doubtful whether it will follow EU rules

In addition to Brussels, local Twitter executives in both India and Paris, who held key positions and liaised with government officials, abruptly left the agency in recent weeks as part of sweeping cuts.

This has led to growing concerns about whether the company has enough employees to keep Twitter compliant with EU law.

“I am concerned about the news of the layoffs of so many Twitter employees in Europe,” Vera Yurova, EU Vice President for Disinformation Code, told the Financial Times.

“If you want to effectively identify and take action against disinformation and propaganda, that requires resources,” he added.

She indicated that, in the context of the Russian disinformation war, she expects Twitter to fully comply with EU laws and fulfill its obligations.

“Twitter has been a very helpful partner in the fight against disinformation and illegal hate speech, and that should not change,” he said.

The European Commission will release data on Thursday showing Twitter is lagging behind in its efforts to enforce its disinformation code, according to the report. These issues come as Elon Musk’s efforts to change Twitter’s business run into a number of issues.
