
Hundreds of French mayors have resigned over the past two years, citing stress attacks and instances of being threatened or attacked.
Some 13,000 mayors of towns and villages have been threatened and 2,000 physically attacked in the last two years, according to figures compiled by their union, with French local government officials speaking of a “serious municipal crisis.”
Trying to explain this phenomenon, the Times of London correspondent notes that mayors in France, by virtue of their position and system, are usually the first to face popular discontent.
