The Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday a draft law that allows foreigners who do not live in Romania, but have been married to Romanian citizens for at least 10 years, to obtain Romanian citizenship.
The PSD-initiated project was adopted with 253 votes “for” and none “against”. The initiative complements Art. 8, paragraph (1) of the Law on Romanian Citizenship No. 21/1991, so that a person who married a Romanian citizen and lived with him abroad for at least 10 years after the conclusion of the marriage, had the right to submit an application to the Romanian state for the acquisition of Romanian citizenship.
Thus, Romanian citizenship can be granted, upon request, to a stateless person or a foreign citizen, if he is married and has lived abroad with a Romanian citizen for at least 10 years since the marriage.
The initiators of the project are PSD senators Robert Kazanchuk, Leonard Azamfirei and the current Minister of Defense Angel Tilvar.
The bill goes to President Klaus Iohannis for promulgation, and the Chamber of Deputies is the forum for decision-making.
