During his visit to Spain for a joint government meeting with the President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejon, Prime Minister Nicolae Chuque gave an interview to the Spanish publication La Razon.

Prime Minister Ciucé said that almost a million Romanians study, live and work in Spain and stressed the constant demand of the Romanian diaspora

  • “The possibility to keep Romanian citizenship at the same time as obtaining Spanish is a constant request of the Romanian diaspora in Spain. We are conducting an open and honest dialogue to jointly find the best solutions to meet this strong interest of our diaspora, taking into account the sensitivities of both parties,” Chuke said.

The prime minister did not want to criticize the countries that oppose Romania’s accession to Schengen, only stating that all assessments confirmed more than 10 years ago that we are ready.

  • “The evaluations this autumn confirmed that Romania is constantly maintaining the level of preparation. The recent communication of the European Commission on the enlargement of the Schengen area with Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia (November 16) and the detailed assessments of the expert staff of the Commission and the Member States who recently visited Romania are a strong basis for a positive decision. , which once again confirms that we only fulfill the requirements of the Schengen Agreement, but that we are one of the most proactive and responsible member states in this area.
  • In addition, an important detail should not be ignored: as a member state of the EU, Romania is already responsible for the protection of the second largest land border in the EU, a mission that we have been carrying out since 2007 with the greatest responsibility.
  • So far, Romania has responded exemplary to what could have been a humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. We guarantee fast, safe and controlled flows for the approximately 2.8 million Ukrainian refugees who have crossed the border into Romania. I believe that this situation is the most relevant proof of the ability of the Romanian authorities to respond not only to current situations, but also to exceptional ones. (..)
  • Europe will be safer with Romania in this area, and Romanian citizens and companies that actively support the EU project have the right to enjoy all the advantages of the internal market.” Chuque said to La Razon.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the support of Spain is important for mobilizing unanimous support for a positive decision on Romania’s accession to Schengen as soon as possible.

When asked what military mistakes Russia will make in Ukraine, Prime Minister Chuka said that “Russia’s biggest mistake was already made when it decided to transfer this war to Europe.”

  • “Russia’s latest military actions – missile strikes on Kyiv and other cities, targeting civilians and critical infrastructure – are cynical and brutal escalations that violate international humanitarian law.
  • At the same time, partial mobilization, fake referendums and “integration” of illegally annexed Ukrainian regions, as well as continued aggressive statements about threats to use nuclear weapons are another evidence of Russia’s irresponsible behavior.” the Prime Minister of Romania also stated.

Romanian officials are in Spain in Castellon on Wednesday for a joint meeting of the governments of Romania and the Kingdom of Spain.

The Romanian delegation, headed by Prime Minister Nicolae Chuke, will include Minister of Foreign Affairs Bohdan Aurescu; Minister of National Defense Angel Tilvar; Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration Attila Cheke; Minister of Labor and Social Solidarity Marius Budai; Minister of Health Alexandru Rafila and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Petre Daea.
